SUMMARY°
In central Europe the history of pond fish culture began at the close of
the
llth century and the beginning of the 12th century. Pond management in
Bohemian reached a peak in the 14th century. At that time, Bohemian already
had 75 000 ha of ponds. By the end of the 15th century, the methods of pond
fish culture were already advanced. The carp breeding cycle from spawning to
marketing was 4 to 6 years. One hectare of production pond was usually stocked
with 300 two—year—old carp. The 16th century was the golden area of Bohemian
pont fish culture.
In that period Bohemia had about 180 000 ha of ponds. Fur—
ther efforts in pond construction slowed down and completely ceased in the
l7th century. It was only in the second half of the l9th century that a need
for
improvement was felt. This was due to the ability of fish culture to com—
pete with other agricultural practices.
'
