limiting pond management capabilities. Under these conditions, effect—
ive fish pond management can be possible with detailed understandings of the
evolving pond conditions and limits of nutrient loading prior to significant
degradation of water quality. A study was initiated to obtain preliminary
observations of the growth capacity of blue tilapia, Oreochromis aureus and
common
carp,
Cyprinus carpio, polyculture and the acc6£5ääîg_Œàîëî"âàiity
dynamics in a 372 m2 by average 9l cm deep (207 m3) fish pond without aera—
tion or water exchange. The fish were fed Purina Trout Chow (36% protein,
62 —N) floating pellets at the approximate daily rate of 32 of the fish bio—
mass
six days each week. A Will—O‘—The—Wisp Bug Light was mounted over the
pond to provide flying nocturnal insects to the fish diet. The net fish
growth amounted to 159.4 Kg for the pond through the 86 day feedinggperiod,
lasting from 6 June to 7 September 1984. The S conversion ratio for the
trout
feed was
1.3.
The
pond was intensively monitored several times each
week of
the
evaluation period for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate nitrogen;
orthoph08phate; total alkalinity; dissolved oxygen; pH; turbidity; tempera—
ture; precipitation; and horizontal solar radiation. Physiochemical patterns
in the pond were found to be directly related to the rise and fall of turbi—
dity through the course of the production period. Ammonia concentrations
remained under 0.8 mg/l and nitrite and nitrate were not detected. During
one
period of low turbidity from 18 to 22 July, a biological inversion was
evident with pH and dissolved oxygen measured at higher levels on the pond
bottom and increasingly lower toward the surface. It is contended that
settled phytoplakton formed a photosynthetically—active algal mat on the
bottom of the pond, The implications for potential fish kills may be
significant.

Concludmg remarks
enclos
d'élevage. On
a
par
exemple
humaines.
