Seaweeds also contain insoluble salts such as calcium and magnesium, although
these are solubilized through transposition with sodium or potassium with alkali
treatment.
The first industrial production of alginic acid took place in the United States in
1926. Since then, it has been produced at large-scale factories in the United
Kingdom, Norway, France, and elsewhere. Basic research began in Japan in 1928,
