they give an effect of depth comparable to that given by the contrabassoon which is
pitched an octave lower but has weak low-frequency spectral components.
The instruments with least expansion of bore are the slide trombones. The
sackbut with its very narrow bore, high value of B, and small bell flare has a low
transfer function: it requires a significantly higher acoustic pressure amplitude in the
mouthpiece than the wide-bore modern trombone to produce a given performance
