12 Integration and Assembly Technology of Lunar Lander
Fig. 12.15 Unloading of the Chang’E-3 lunar lander at Xichang Qingshan Airport
limited by the airport location and the aircraft. Large transportation aircraft such as
AN-124, AIRBUS-SUPER TRANSPORTER can transport large spacecraft.
(4) Sea transportation. It is only suitable to launch site near the sea. Its advantage is
that large dimension and heavy object can be transported. Its disadvantages are slow
and poor environment. The sea transportation is closely relative to the geographical
location of launch site.
In the development process of the Chang’E-3 lunar lander, road transportation, rail
transportation and air transportation were applied. The flight model of the Chang’E3 lunar lander was transported to the Capital Airport by road transportation, then
was transported to Xichang Qingshan Airport by AN-124 aircraft, and finally was
transported to the launch site by road transportation. The ground support equipment
was transported to the launch site by railway transportation. The unloading of the
Chang’E-3 lunar lander at Xichang Qingshan Airport is shown in Fig. 12.15.
12.5.10 Assembly of Radioisotope
In order to survive under extremely low temperatures of −180°C on lunar surface,
radioisotope devices were equipped on the Chang’E-3 lunar lander. In order to ensure
the safety and process feasibility, the assembly process was designed with simulation,
rehearsal and process optimization. The assembly of radioisotope device is referred
as ‘nuclear operation’ in the chapter.
