external plate, tank, pipe, engine and cable. In order to ensure the detailed manufacture and assembly of low temperature insulation components, the digital method
was applied for the Chang’E-3 lunar lander. The cutting of the drawing template,
subsidiary and sewing of multilayer insulation components were implemented by
automated cutting machine, which had greatly improved the shape accuracy and
efficiency of manufacture of multilayer insulation components.
2. Assembly and Arrangement of Multilayer Around Optical Sensor
Inappropriate assembly of multilayer insulation components may obstruct the field
of view of optical sensor such as camera. Therefore, assembly, arrangement and fix of
multilayer around optical sensor shall be strict controlled. The multilayer insulation
assembly on the fill/drain valve of the Chang’E-3 lunar lander appeared in the field
of view of the descent camera. Therefore, the arrangement and fix status of multilayer insulation assembly on the fill/drain valve had important influence on camera
imaging. The outer contour of the multilayer insulation assembly should be as small
as possible and not peel off. After repeated confirmation and process verification, the
‘lining’ type assembly process was applied for the multilayer insulation assembly on
the fill/drain valve, which not only achieved the minimization of the multilayer insulation assembly, but also ensured the shape and performance of multi-layer insulation
assembly. The assembly status of the multilayer insulation on the fill/drain valve is
shown in Fig. 12.9, which optimized the dimensions of the multi-layer insulation
as much as possible. A photograph taken by the descent camera during landing is
shown in Fig. 12.10.
3. Manufacture and Assembly of High Temperature Multilayer
The high temperature multilayer was applied for high temperature protection of the
hardware surrounding the engine or thruster during firing. The high temperature
