Chapter 12
Integration and Assembly Technology
of Lunar Lander
12.1 Introduction
Spacecraft system integration and assembly is the whole process from the beginning of integration and assembly of subsystem to the delivery of qualified spacecraft
for launch, which is generally called the final assembly of spacecraft. Spacecraft
system integration and assembly shall meet the requirements of system design, final
assembly design, functions and performance of subsystem design. It is an important phase of spacecraft development, which is also the final step to ensure system
performance of spacecraft [1]. Spacecraft system integration and assembly involves
multiple disciplines and systems. The major jobs include instrument assembly, cable
assembly, pipeline assembly, and assembly of thermal control components. Generally, the installation and transportation of spacecraft are also included in spacecraft
system integration and assembly [2].
The Chang’E-3 lunar lander was the first soft lander on celestial body by China.
The Chang’E-3 lunar lander was a lander for lunar soft-landing mission with the
features of compact product layout and cross-support module structure with external
equipment modules. The characteristics of system integration and assembly of the
Chang’E-3 included complex assembly of propulsion subsystem, high accuracy of
multi-sensor assembly, high assembly requirements for movable parts, high risk of
assembly of radioisotope device, and high requirements for assembly reliability. All
above difficulties should be fully considered, analyzed and solved during integration
and assembly design.
In this chapter, development status of system integration and assembly technology
is introduced. As an example, the technical features of integration and assembly of
the Chang’E-3 lunar lander is described, including the design of system integrated
assembly of the lunar lander, typical assembly technology and application, such
as the assembly of propulsion subsystem, instrument, cable and thermal-control
components, and the transportation.
