Scientists and Engineers in Ballooning
The following people were instrumental in both scientific and commercial
ballooning. Some were the pioneers, some were the operational managers
and engineers, some are well known scientists, and some are corporation
people involved in commercial ballooning. While this is certainly a short
list, they are representative of the world of ballooning. It would be impossible to name them all, but the people included are those in the Frontispiece
or who either gave me some input or were associated with balloon flights
described in the book.
A.2.1 The Pioneers
The first scientific pioneering balloonists were described in my book Stratonauts:
Pioneers Venturing into the Stratosphere, 2014. Discussed were Jacques Charles,
Professor Reinhart Suring, Dr. Arthur Berson, Professor Richard Assmann, Dr.
Arthur Berson, and Leon Teisserenc de Bort. I’ll leave it to the balloon enthusiast
and students to review their contributions.
