Chapter 39
Study on AE Detection Signal
of Composite Barrel Under Axial
Compression Failure Load
Xiaolin Li, Wei Yin, Hao Chen, Gang Sun, and Lixia Wang
Abstract AE detection is performed in the axial compression failure test of
composite barrels. Through analysis of AE signals such as energy, hits, amplitude
and duration, it is concluded that the AE signals can accurately reflect the load change
and damage of the test piece. By analyzing the signal frequency, the correspondence
between the damage type of the test piece and the signal frequency is obtained. AE
detection can effectively monitor the elastic deformation stage and damage development and accumulation process of cylindrical parts, and can provide reference for the
analysis of AE signals during the test of test pieces of similar materials and similar
structure.
39.1 Introduction
Composite structures are more prone to various micro or macro defects than metal
structures in the manufacturing and use process [1]. They have unique damage mechanisms and the damage process is more complicated [2]. It can be known from the
literature that the damage and fracture of composite materials mainly include three
types of damage modes: substrate cracking, interface damage, and fiber breakage.
Among them, interface damage includes detachment of the substrate and fiber interface, fiber pull-out, and interlayer separation; Fracture includes normal and split
modes of fiber [3]. At present, the commonly used methods for composite damage
detection are: X-ray, UT, A-UT, AE, etc. [4]. AE detection refers to the phenomenon
of transient stress waves generated when a material or a component enters the irreversible plastic deformation stage due to stress exceeding the yield limit, or cracks
are formed and propagated, and strain energy is rapidly released during fracture. This
technology can diagnose the damage condition through the stress wave released by
the material or component, and has become an important non-destructive testing
method for studying the damage failure of composite materials [5].
