36.2.4.1 AE Test and Retest Results
Two meaningful acoustic source locations (S1 and S2 in Fig. 36.5, respectively
corresponding to ▲1 and ▲2 in Fig. 36.2.) were obtained during AE monitoring. A
penetrating crack (verified by UT) in the conical shell was found after partial removal
of the half tube at S1. Another crack was found after polishing the outer surface of
the shell at S2 for 20 mm, which was verified by UT to extend to the inner surface.
In other words, there is an internal surface crack with a depth of up to 80 mm at the
source S2. Photos of two defects are shown in Figs. 36.6 and 36.7.
