main cross-upstreet, which is a T-shaped clear area at the heart of the village is
only lined with bure houses. As a result, the modern houses had the leverage of
shielding effect by the bigger bure houses. Additionally, Fig. 16.3 also shows that
the contemporary structures in the main part of the village had the benefit of the
terrain effect of the trees in the peripheries of the village. Both the shielding and
terrain effects cause a reduction in the wind load on a structure because of upwind
obstructions. Figure 16.4 shows that the community retained adherence to this rule.
Amid the newly constructed contemporary houses after Cyclone Winston, the main
cross-street still had all bures.
16.6 Challenges to Rebuilding Bure Houses
Three major challenges in rebuilding bure houses in the aftermath of a disaster
