the provinces. The provinces mentioned above have reputable national and private
universities. Universities are potential institutions to provide youth/students access
to information, and reputable universities generally encourage students to have international exposure. Out of the 3,089 higher education institutions in Indonesia, only
37 involved in the University Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction and have education
or research program on disaster management. There are 30 out of 37 of those universities located in Java and Sumatra Islands (Sakurai and Bisri 2013), where most of
the youth applicants reside (Fig. 14.2).
Before doing an in-depth analysis of the portfolio of youth engagement in DRR,
we look at the basic information of their affiliation to one or more organizations. From
the record, we learned that 116 applicants (26%) did not have any DRR experience
but they were engaged in youth-related organizations; 118 applicants (26.46%) have
DRR experiences although limited to only as participants of a program or event, e.g.,
DRR conferences, trainings, or seminars; and 212 (47.54%) have involved in the
past as initiators or organizers in disaster-related programs or initiatives. We further
observed in-depth only on these 212 participants’ involvement in disaster-related
programs or initiatives.
