Central Java 2019. The average family income level in Semarang city lies at about
IDR 2,500,000 (Comola and Mello 2011). Only 15% of the respondents said that
they have a family income of more than IDR 2,500,000 (Fig. 12.5). These low family
income levels could be a problem when people need to adapt to the increasing floods.
12.5 Experiences with Floods
The survey initially wished to clarify whether the floods were actually experienced
by health cadres. These data were collected at a specific time moment. As many
as 87% of the health cadres in Kemijen reported that they were suffering from
flooding (Fig. 12.6). Further, 23% of them indicated that the period in which they
were suffering from floods already lasted for more than 8 years (Fig. 12.7). Fifty-two
percent of the respondents suffered from flooding between 1 and 24 h (Fig. 12.8)
with the most common floods depth was between 0.51 and 1 m (Fig. 12.9). Based
on their experiences in the past, the duration of floods appeared to be between about
1 and 24 h since the floods arrived and left along with the tides. Even sometimes the
floods are much worse than average. Some of them reported that the polder system
has solved all of their flooding problems. However, others still experience flooding
and are not so sure that the polder system has fixed everything.
