climate variability observed over comparable time periods.” Diposaptono mentioned
climate change resulted in changes in the physical environment in coastal areas and
small islands, among others in the form of seawater intrusion to land, tidal waves,
floods, droughts, inundation on low land, and coastal erosion. These physical changes
certainly affected all sectors of life and livelihood in coastal areas and small islands.
These physical changes have an impact on coastal morphology, natural ecosystems,
settlements, water resources, fisheries, and socioeconomic and cultural conditions.
Seeing the impact of climate change in Indonesia, the most vulnerable category
of society is rural communities, especially coastal communities and small islands
not to mention the existence of the Bajo people in which almost all coastal areas in
Indonesia are inhabited by them (read Suku Bajo). Basically, the Bajo tribe which
has an average fishermen’s profession in daily activities is very dependent on nature.
Because, from birth, the Bajo tribe has been introduced to life on the surface of the
water. Because, the sea is the main source of livelihood for the Bajo people (they
live from fishermen). If the prediction of the impact of climate change really occurs
between 2050–2100, the Bajo people can be said to be the people who are most
prepared to face change or vice versa as the first community to face such a disaster
or impact.
The Bajo have a range of local scholars who support in activities utilizing SDL,
including (1) knowledge of the wind season; (2) the number of catches; (3) knowledge
in terms of marine navigation; (4) knowledge of the characteristics of gathered fish;
and (5) and natural signs that show time. These things are very useful for facilitating
the fishing process that they have known for generations. Likewise, the system of
local knowledge related to climate used in the use, preservation and management of
marine resources by coastal communities, among others, is
1. Knowledge related to the wind, in the West season (namberek), they are generally
experienced from January to August, East season from September to December.
However, in the West season, there is a difference in wind blows, namely the West
season with East wind blows occurring from June to October, whereas West wind
blows occur from November to August.
2. Regarding rain, which is usually the rainy season, they usually experience from
October to April, while the dry season is May to September.
3. Relating to currents and winds in the West season, the currents are stronger and
the wind blows faster than in the East season.
With regard to climate change, what people understand and feel is the change in
the rainy season and the dry season. Drastic changes in nature and those that are
difficult to anticipate will further add to the panic about natural shocks that are ready
to eliminate plants or their catches. Fishing communities live in uncertainty about
the results of their livelihoods because they depend on nature (season and weather).
With the impact of climate change that has a direct effect on the environment, this
uncertainty is increasing in the aspects of fishermen’s livelihoods. Climate change is
a global issue and has become an important issue in the world. Climate change caused
by global warming has an impact on various changes to the earth. To reduce the rate
of impact of climate change, the Government of Indonesia has issued Presidential
