meaning of technology for the community as a tool of life is able to balance
the natural needs of the sea, users of equipment, and the belief that the technology used provides comfort, security, and safety because it does not conflict
with applicable natural law.
4. Local Wisdom Which Serves for Culture and Science Development;
In terms of fishing, the Bajo people are very adaptive to the environment, such
as protecting coral reefs as a place for fish to live, lay eggs, and eat fish. As
well, there is a prohibition to catch small-sized fish and eat them. They may only
consume fish that have large sizes or are worthy of harvest. The Bajo people
also have quite good conservation awareness, such as the taboo ban, which is
the prohibition of catching sea cucumbers that stand because they are believed
to be the king of sea cucumbers; after the sea cucumbers have fallen, they are
allowed to catch the sea cucumbers around them. Scientifically, the sea cucumber
stands in a laying state so that the Bajo people are unconsciously maintaining
the sustainability of sea cucumber resources. The wisdom of the Bajo people in
managing Marine Resources is also seen in reef fishing activities only during the
East wind season.
5. Local Wisdom Which Serves as Advice, Trust, Literature, and Taboos;
As a nomadic sea tribe (sea nomads), the Bajo are an ethnic group that has
successfully spread across the archipelago. The concept of their local wisdom
in the form of a ban is actually not limiting their lives, but rather guiding their
lives to remain sustainable. The preservation of nature where they seek livelihood
will certainly have a good impact on their lives. The concept of pamali plays an
important role in preventing damage to the oceans by Bajo tribes because the
Bajo people must maintain the condition and sustainability of the sea. If the sea
is always in good condition, of course it will guarantee their lives. Conversely, if
the condition of the ocean is damaged, the source of their livelihoods is in danger.
Without realizing it, by obeying the rules or pamali, the preservation of marine
and coastal ecosystems will be maintained. Thus, indirectly, the Bajo tribe has
made efforts to preserve the marine and coastal ecosystems. Local wisdom is
obtained from generation to generation; in the view of the Bajo people having a
philosophy of living in harmony with nature, they see nature as a part of their lives.
Therefore, the Bajo have a conservation ethic that treats nature wisely, without
over-exploitation. Pamali is an ethic of the Bajo people in building relationships
with their natural environment. In the pamali, there is an environmental ethic that
must not be violated because, if it is violated, the culprit will get a katula. Katula
is an ancestral punishment for those who break the pamali, in the form of illness,
disaster, or get a bad future. Some Bajo pamali related to conservation ethics,
for example pamali cut down mangrove trees carelessly, and pamali throws into
the forest area carelessly. The two pamali contain messages related to environmental preservation. Pamali felling trees carelessly is a message that prohibits
damaging forests, but that does not mean that they should not take advantage
of the necessities of life. Likewise the prohibition of throwing into the forest
carelessly containing messages is prohibited from damaging the ecosystem in
the forest. This contains the message that the forest area not only consists of
