Coastal communities, in Southeast Sulawesi, Eastern Indonesia, have developed
a number of adaptation steps to the impacts of climate change including the development of aquaculture (fish, non-fish, and seaweed), developing alternative livelihoods
with gardening, farming, and livestock, developing processed products, long-term
fisheries, use of environmentally friendly fishing gear, use of modern fishing technology, and developing marine community base tourism. Apart from the adaptation
strategies developed by the community, it is possible to continue to experience more
impacts on their daily livelihoods because some strategies are not environmentally
friendly, for example, fishing technology that might damage the environment. The
percentage of each adaptation strategy carried out can be seen in the following table
(Fig. 8.2).
One strategy that can be developed by coastal communities, especially those
living in remote areas and small islands, is to develop seaweed farming. Seaweed is a
commodity that is very easy to strengthen the economy of coastal communities. The
main indicators for being able to develop people’s lives with seaweed are very easy
cultivation methods and easy access to funds to support the daily lives of coastal
communities. Recommendations for improving the way seaweed is cultivated are
important. A good cultivation method will increase community seaweed yields. The
level of income of people with seaweed cultivation is quite significant. The method
that can be used to further increase production is by applying protected seaweed
cultivation. Protected seaweed cultivation is a seaweed cultivation strategy that can
increase growth and overall production value. The use of nets in seaweed cultivation
has a specific growth rate that is much higher than the longline method. From the
results of the research we did, it was found that seaweed SGR with longline (current
method) can reach 3–4%/day, while AlgaNet (projected cultivation equipment with
a net system) has SGR of up to 10%/day. The production of seaweed growth in
one particular area with AlgaNet can exceed 200–300% of total seaweed production
