R. Sharma et al.
is limited research on developing home fashion products like pillows, runners, rug
and carpets to aid nighttime navigation.
Cognitive impairment [10] when eyesight deteriorates due to age or illness, it has
far-reaching consequences for the independence of the elderly. Light cannot correct
deteriorating eyesight, but it can help to compensate, restoring self-confidence.
Proper illumination helps avoid visual missteps and prevent falls. Therefore,
designing home furnishings with photoluminescent pigment textile prints may be
an area of study that may enable the aged people to function with ease. Additionally,
there are limited studies on a real nighttime environment to evaluate the effectiveness
of the photoluminescent printed textiles by elderly people. Thus the objectives of the
paper may be briefly presented as:
• To study the effect of printing with PL pigments of different pigment concentration
and particle size on luminosity.
• Also, to correlate the luminosity of PL printed textiles with the visual perception
of the elderly in a nighttime environment.
• To design home fashion products to aid edge definition and path illumination
facilitating nighttime navigation.
2 Research Methodology
The research study was conducted using mixed methods. It consisted of experimental
research to study the effects of PL pigments printed textiles using lux meter and
SEM imaging, followed by a study of visual perception by users in a nighttime
environment. This was followed by design development using user-centric research
approach.
3 Materials and Methods
The methodology used is experimental research to study the emission intensity of
the printed textiles and a visual perception study by elderly people in a nighttime
environment in a real-time natural set up. To study the intensity of photoluminescence and effects of different photoluminescent pigments printed textiles lux meter
and Time Resolved Photo-luminescent (TR-PL) spectroscopy were used. This was
followed by a study of visual perception by the elderly in a nighttime environment
in their personal bedrooms.
The research study was carried out on fabrics popularly used for home furnishings
in India. Therefore, 100 % cotton, medium weight plain-woven fabric of 300 g/m
2 ,
with EPI 68 and PPI 68 was used. Additionally, studies were also carried out on
different types of fabrics commercially for home fashion namely mulberry silk (plain
woven, 40 g/m
2 ), dupion silk (plain woven, 60 g/m
2 ) and matka silk (plain woven,
100 g/m
2 ) to study the effect of the luminosity of the photoluminescent pigments.
