2.3 Part-3: Improvement of Existing Material to Meet Stab
and Impact Resistance Requirement
Three types of materials were tried to improve existing body protector to improve
stab and impact resistance property. These materials were coded as B1, B2 and B3.
Indian Patent has been filed for these materials (Application No. 201911030134 dt.
25.07.2019). Besides stab and impact tests, they were also analyzed for mass and
thickness properties. The mass in g/m
2 of B1, B2 and B3 materials was found to be
350, 410 and 450, respectively, when determined as per IS 7016 part-1 test method.
The thickness of these materials was determined using Screw gauge. The thickness
of B1, B2 and B3 materials was found to be 0.38 mm, 041 mm and 0.45 mm,
respectively.
3 Results and Discussion
3.1 Information Collected by Survey
During the survey one to one interaction was done with 95 respondents using
questionnaires. Filled data was analyzed. It was found that.
• 35 respondents of age group 19–30,
• 48 respondents of age group 31–40 and
• 12 respondents were age group of 41–50.
This data indicated that most of the respondents (83 numbers) age was in between
19 and 40 years. It was also revealed that 86% of the respondents were males.
It is clear from the survey (Table 2) that all the respondents were well aware about
preventive measures to be taken during a riot/unrest situation. During riots/unrest
situation, all respondents informed that they used available protective equipment
like body protector, helmet, etc. They also informed that they did not use these
equipments regularly. Most of them said that they used these equipments when felt
necessary during riots/unrest situation.
The performance of present body protectors is given in Table 3. From the table,
it is clear that most of the respondents were not satisfied with the performance of
the present body protectors. According to them, these body protectors were heavy
and bulky. Besides, these body protectors were also provided with inferior quality of
elastic tape and other accessories. In the hygiene point of view, these body protectors
smelt bad and were never washed. The design of the present body protector was as per
the requirements of the male respondents (troops). The design of present body protectors was not suitable for female troopers. However, both male and female soldiers
were not satisfied with the present design and dimensions of the body protectors.
The output of the survey with suggestions for present body protectors is
summarized [16] below.
