GLOSSARY
285
Annual removals: The net volume of growing stock trees removed
from the inventory during a specified year by harvesting, cultural operations such as timber stand improvement, or land
clearing.
API gravity: A measure of the lightness or heaviness of petroleum
that is related to density and specific gravity: API = (141.5/sp
gr @ 60°F) - 131.5.
Aquifer: A subsurface rock interval that will produce water; often
the underlay of a petroleum reservoir.
Aromatics: A range of hydrocarbons which have a distinctive sweet
smell and include benzene and toluene' occur naturally in
petroleum and are also extracted as a petrochemical feedstock,
as well as for use as solvents.
Asphalt: The nonvolatile product obtained by distillation and treatment of an asphaltic crude oil; a manufactured product.
Asphalt cement: Asphalt especially prepared as to quality and
consistency for direct use in the manufacture of bituminous
pavements.
Asphaltene (asphaltene constituents): The brown to black powdery material produced by treatment of petroleum, heavy oil,
bitumen, or residuum with a low-boiling liquid hydrocarbon.
B
Bank: The concentration of oil (oil bank) in a reservoir that moves
cohesively through the reservoir.
Barrel (bbl): The unit of measure used by the petroleum industry;
equivalent to approximately forty-two US gallons or approximately thirty four (33.6) Imperial gallons or 159 liters; 7.2 barrels
are equivalent to one tonne of oil (metric).
Barrel of oil equivalent (boe): The amount of energy contained in
a barrel of crude oil, i.e. approximately 6.1 GJ (5.8 million Btu),
equivalent to 1,700 kWh.
Bbl: A barrel of 42 U.S. gallons of oil.
Bcf : Billion cubic feet of natural gas.
Befe: Billion cubic feet equivalent, determined using the ratio of six
Mcf of natural gas to one Bbl of crude oil, condensate or natural
gas liquids.
Benzene: A colorless aromatic liquid hydrocarbon (C 6 H 6 ).
Benzin: A refined light naphtha used for extraction purposes.
