12.9 Is This Synchrotron Radiation?
Throughout this book we have grown accustomed to synchrotron radiation sources
on a kilometer scale. A recent paper in Science reports a source on a sub-millimeter
scale, using a metasurface to guide a pulse of 800 nm radiation along a 100-mμ-scale
circular arc inside a LiTiO 3 crystal [608]. For a final late-night debate, is this
beautiful picture from a true synchrotron radiation source? (Fig. 12.13).
12.10 Suggested Exercises
1. Calculate the Pierce parameter ρ for a SASE X-ray FEL assuming an electron
current of 1 kA, a beam energy of 2.85 GeV, an undulator period of 29 mm,
horizontal and vertical rms beam dimensions of 40 μ, and K ¼ 1.513.
2. Calculate the gain length for the above Pierce parameter.
3. Estimate the length to saturation.
4. Estimate the emitted radiation per pulse at saturation.
