Except for nanodiscs, whose acceptance is, deservedly, very broad, the above remarks could
apply to any of the nonconventional systems for handling membrane proteins in vitro that have been
described in the opening chapters. If this book encourages membrane biologists to further exploit the
rich potential offered by amphipols and other out-of-the-way surfactants, basic and applied research
ought to reap more benefits from the hefty amount of work the development of these methodologies
has required, and the not-inconsiderable time invested into writing the present work will not have been
wasted.
