7.8 Description of Continuous Study
The fixed-bed hybrid bioreactor was run under continuous mode for the treatment of
municipal wastewater. For this purpose, the reactor was fed with municipal wastewater under varying hydraulic retention times (HRT) and MLSS. A peristaltic pump
was employed to adjust the flow rate and thereby fixing a certain HRT.
7.8.1 Basic Approach
A continuous study was performed using municipal wastewater as influent with
varying HRT ranging between 4 and 8 h and varying input biomass concentrations in
the range of 2500–3000 mg/l. The reactor was run under continuous mode following
the above-stated operating ranges with a view to find out the COD removal efficiency as a performance indicator. The continuous study was also aimed to compare
the performance data with predicted ones and hence to validate the mathematical
modeling developed earlier. Each continuous run under a particular operating condition was monitored until the quasi-steady-state condition reached in the reactor
system.
