6 Performance Evaluation of Fixed-Bed Hybrid Bioreactor …
6.4 Compatibility of Fixed-Bed Hybrid Bioreactor
for the Treatment of Synthetic Carbonaceous
Wastewater Treatment
The present continuous study has been carried out to evaluate the performance of
a fixed-bed aerobic hybrid bioreactor for removal of carbonaceous organic matter
from synthetic carbonaceous wastewater. Various experimental combinations have
been performed to obtain optimum results in terms of COD removal. COD removal
profiles obtained from various experimental studies suggest that more than 85%
COD removal is possible with initial COD concentration in the range of (150 ± 50)
to (250 ± 50) mg/l in fixed-bed hybrid bioreactor at a hydraulic retention time of
8 h. Optimum results have been obtained at MLSS concentration (3000–3500) mg/l
and at a hydraulic retention period (6–8) hours corresponding to attached biomass
concentration of about 1000 mg/l. The rate of biodegradation may be enhanced
by means of additional biomass present in the attached-growth surface, in turn by
increasing the total biomass concentration.
