Session 1: Metal-Matrix Composites
Session 2: Nanocomposites
Session 3: Novel Composites and Coatings
In the three oral sessions, recent advances in composite materials processing on
aspects specific to microstructural development, mechanical behavior, and resultant
properties, and efforts made in the domain specific to noticeable advances in
analysis, measurement, and resultant observations and interpretations for a few
of the metal-based composites are well presented and discussed by the contributing
authors. A few of the papers that were submitted by the contributing authors have
been included in this bound volume. During the course of each oral presentation,
each speaker or presenter did put forth in a cohesive, convincing, and compelling
manner the knowledge he gained from his research and his observations and
interpretations based on a synergism of concepts spanning the domains of science,
engineering, and technology. We, the symposium organizers, extend our warmest
thanks and appreciation to both the presenters and the participants. We also extend
our most sincere thanks and appreciation to the elected and governing representatives of the Composite Materials Committee and Structural Materials Division of
TMS for their understanding and acknowledgement of our interest and timely
approval of our request to organize this intellectually stimulating symposium.
Unbounded gratitude and valued appreciation having resonating significance are
also extended to the following individuals:
(i) Ms. Patricia Warren (Programming and Proceedings Specialist) at TMS for
her sustained attention, assistance, interest, involvement, and timely participation stemming from understanding. Ms. Patricia Warren did ensure a timely
execution of all related, relevant, and required intricacies specific to both
orchestration and layout of this symposium from the moment following its
approval through systematic and orderly communication, meticulous compilation, and timely publication of this bound volume.
(ii) The timely publication of this bound volume has also been made possible by
the cooperation provided by the contributing authors and most importantly,
and needed, the publishing staff headed by the dedicated Department Head,
Content, Mr. Matt Baker at TMS.
We hope that this bound volume of significant technical merit worthy of archival
value will provide all interested readers, both the experienced and the new entrant,
new perspectives and directions in their research efforts in the domain specific to
research on metal-matrix composites. The growth and demand of metal-matrix
composites will only show a continuing upward trend, and we do hope that by
putting together this monumental symposium we have tried to both aid and assist
