Preface
The development, emergence, and proliferation in the use of metal-matrix composites has in recent years revealed an observable increase, often replacing the
heavier monolithic materials for use in a spectrum of both performance-critical and
non-performance-critical applications. The high demand for these composites is also
seen in the industries spanning air transportation, ground transportation,
defense-related products, and an array of commercial products to include sporting
goods. To explore the growth of knowledge on aspects related and relevant to
composite materials research, development, emergence, and use in appropriate
applications and to concurrently promote communication with specific reference to
recent advances in the domains spanning analysis, measurement, observations, and
applications of the family of metal-matrix composites, this international symposium,
the third in a series, is being held to bring to light noticeable contributions made by
pioneering researchers in the domains spanning observations, analysis, and interpretation of the specifics related to processing, characterization, property evaluation,
applications, and even large-scale commercialization of the family of metal-matrix
composites. Appropriately this symposium was given the title “Metal-Matrix
Composites: Advances in Analysis, Measurement and Observations,” and was held
during TMS 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting & Exhibition, March 15–18, 2021. This
symposium was well represented with abstracts from the United States and international engineers and scientists spread through academia, research laboratories, and
industries. This volume contains several of the papers presented in the three-session
symposium, sponsored by the Composite Materials Committee and Structures
Materials Division of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). A total of
23 abstracts were approved for presentation (primarily oral) in the three sessions:
