Figure 8 provides a higher magnification of the iron oxide–gold composite structure to illustrate that even after four seeded treatments, the integrity of the nanoparticles is preserved. Figure 8a, c further confirms the gold loading of the final seeded
particles showing the presence of gold and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS)
mapping of the composite nanostructures. Once iron oxide–gold-decorated nanoparticles were found to be reproducibly synthesized, the composite structures were
explored as possible SERS reporter of a model analyte.
