within the structure of S-S CMF made it an effective insulator. The presence of air
within S-S CMF porosities acts as an insulator, which is similar to other insulating
foams such as styrofoam, insulating foam boards and spray foams. However, S-S
CMF is made of steel and can withstand heat and fire up to over 1200°C without any
damage as could be seen in this study.
The S-S CMF has been measured to have a thermal conductivity 5–10 times less
than that for solid stainless steel and the carbon steel [8, 17]. The porous matrix
contains both air and bound water which will tend to slow the through thickness
heating of the material. The air in the hollow spheres reduces the conduction through
the material. The surface cavities may also contribute to the reduction in heat transfer
