12 Localized or Spatially Selective Electrodeposition Methods
transient following the particle nucleation [182]. When Pt was deposited onto glassy
carbon from acidic femtomolar Pt(IV) solution, the particle nucleation at <0.1 Hz
frequency was accompanied by the onset of the hydrogen evolution, leading to significantly larger currents than the electrochemical nucleation of the nanoparticle itself.
After the activation of the electrode due to the appearance of a new particle with high
electrocatalytic activity, the current peak decayed due to the shielding effect of the
hydrogen bubble covering the active spot of the electrode. A very similar process
was observed upon anodic polarization and nucleation of Co-oxide nanoparticles
accompanied by oxygen evolution. In both cases, the nanoparticle growth became
limited by the side reaction originating from the locally modified electrochemical
activity.
