Fig. 5.24 Scenario 1 (854 million use fuelwood for 100 days a year). Ref—India submission on
Forest reference levels for REDD+
1 kg of fuel wood = 0.7 kg of coal
1 kg of fuel wood = 2.35 kg of dried dung
1 kg fuelwood = 1.53 kg crop-waste
Scenario 1: 854 million people use fuelwood for 100 days and other fuels for
the balance period (Fig. 5.24). Under this scenario India will need an additional 60
million tons of coal or 130 million tons of additional crop waste or 200 million tons
of additional dried animal dung if fuelwood use is completely stopped. If fuelwood
consumption continues as such, at least 145 million tons of CO 2 will be added to the
atmosphere every year.

Scenario 2: 854 million people use fuelwood for 200 days and other fuels for the
balance period (Fig. 5.25). Under this scenario India will need an additional 120
million tons of coal or 160 million tons of additional crop waste or 400 million tons
of additional dried animal dung. If fuelwood consumption continues as such, at least
290 million tons of CO 2 will be added to the atmosphere every year.
Scenario 3: 854 million people use fuelwood for 300 days and other fuels for the
balance period (Fig. 5.26). Under this scenario India will need an additional 180
million tons of coal, 392 million tons of additional crop waste, and 600 million tons
of additional dried animal dung. If fuelwood consumption continues as such, at least
435 million tons of CO 2 will be added to the atmosphere every year.
Scenario 4: 854 million people use fuelwood for 365 days and other fuels for the
balance period (Fig. 5.27). Under this scenario India will need an additional 218
million tons of coal, 477 million tons of additional crop waste, and 732 million tons
of additional dried animal dung. If fuelwood consumption continues as such, at least
530 million tons of CO 2 will be added to the atmosphere every year.
One can work out a series of different scenarios using different permutations with
different types of fuels, renewable or non-renewable, commercial, or free. What is
19 1 kilogram of wood when burnt releases 1.7 kilogram of CO 2 on average.
