up to 100 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) annually. More than 312 million LED
bulbs were distributed that led to a reduction of 33 MtCO 2 emissions per year till
October 2018. Around 2 million energy-efficient fans were distributed, which
resulted in an estimated energy savings of 191.41 million kilowatt-hour per year
and GHG emission reduction of 0.1 MtCO 2 per year.
5. A total of 66 super-critical thermal units with a total capacity of
45,550 megawatts were installed that reduced CO 2 emission by about 7 million
tons in 2016–2017.
6. A retrofitting project was initiated by Energy Efficiency Services Limited
(EESL) in 2014 in the building sector that led to energy savings of 79.8 GWh
and CO 2 reduction of 65,578 tons till October 2018.
7. More than 50 million LPG connections were provided to below poverty line
(BPL) families.
8. The national policy on biofuels adopted in 2018 aims to increase the usage
of biofuels in the energy and transportation sectors of the country during the
coming decade. Currently, biodiesel blending percentage in diesel is less than
0.1% and ethanol blending percentage in petrol is around 2%. An indicative
target of 20% blending of ethanol in petrol and 5% blending of biodiesel in
diesel is proposed by 2030.
9. The national electric mobility mission 2020 (NEMMP) is a significant and
ambitious initiative aimed at gradually ensuring 6–7 million electric/hybrid
vehicles in India by the year 2020.
10. Almost a third of railway network has been electrified (23,555 km by March
2016), and many mass-transit and urban transport projects have also been
initiated under the National Urban Renewal Mission.
11. A crop diversification program has been in the states of Punjab, Haryana, and
western Uttar Pradesh since 2013–2014 to divert the area under water-intensive
paddy to alternative crops like pulses, oilseeds, maize, cotton, and to agroforestry plantation with the objective of tackling the problem of declining soil
fertility and depleting water table in these states. An emission reduction of 0.21
MtCO 2 e (2010–2016) has been achieved under this project.
12. Rice intensification and direct seeded rice systems in various regions of the
country led to an emission reduction of 0.18 MtCO 2 between 2010 and 2016
and 0.17 MtCO 2 between 2014 and 2016, respectively.
13. The total carbon stock in the forests for the year 2017 was estimated to be 7083
Mt.
14. A program for planting trees in 8.39 million hectares has been envisaged
cleaning the river Ganges program with a potential to sequester around 87.26
MtCO 2 per year. A new policy for highways (Green Highway Policy 2015)
was launched to promote the greening of national highway corridors across the
country with the participation of the community, farmers, NGOs, private sector,
institutions, government agencies and the state forest departments. Under this
policy, around 140,000 km of national highways will be planted up with trees.
