attractive part of renewable is that it can be used in a decentralized manner—from
individual building to large complexes and in rural as well as urban areas. In fact, a
household can generate its own need through solar rooftop system using photovoltaic
panels. Solar lights with sensors can be used for longer duration for lighting homes.
Solar collectors and heat pumps can provide low carbon heating. Solar cookers are
the best substitute for replacing firewood and other organic waste. Windmills can help
villagers draw water from wells. In a nutshell, next 10–20 years will be golden period
for Indians to switch over from coal to green electricity. Renewable energy is the
best bet for ‘Net Zero Energy – Zero Carbon’ housing that currently consumes nearly
40% of energy for lighting, heating, cooling, and ventilation. Simple changes such
as judicious placement of windows and roof shadings, natural green surroundings,
high ceilings and vents, efficient house lighting, placing solar panels on roof tops
will revolutionize energy woes (Box 4) in India. Energy saved in urban areas can be
distributed to villages to help them set up small and medium industries.
10 Each kilowatt hour of electricity (about as much as it takes to run a dishwasher) generates over
0.5 kilogram of carbon dioxide.
