TANAP
TANAP aims to transport gas from Azerbaijan’s Shah Deniz 2 Field to Turkey, to
then be shifted to Europe. TANAP combines with the South Caucasus Pipeline
(SCP) and the TAP to form the greater Southern Natural Gas Corridor (www.tanap.
com 2016).
TANAP begins at the border town of Turkgözü in Turkey’s Ardahan province
near Georgia, traveling through the country to Greece. From this point, it is to connect with the TAP Natural Gas Pipeline to transfer natural gas to European countries. The project is set to include two outlets for connection to the national natural
gas transmission network, one in Eskişehir and one in Trakya (Fig. 3.4).
It is anticipated that TANAP will export 23 billion cubic meters of gas per year
by 2023, increasing to 31 billion cubic meters per year by 2026 through contributions from other partners. TANAP is largely considered the ideal manifestation of
the Southern Gas Corridor idea proposed by the European Commission in 2008,
transiting as it does, strictly non-Russian gas to Europe via non-Russian routes. In
other words, TANAP represents the answer to the EU’s diversification question
(www.tanap.com 2016).
The other likely country to potentially contribute resources to TANAP is Iran,
which has the most proven natural gas reserves of all Caspian countries, and the
second-highest in the world. Despite this vast potential, Iran only produces enough
gas to meet domestic energy demands (www.tanap.com 2016). Thus, it has been
deemed desirable by policymakers in Iran to produce electricity via nuclear reactors
to free up the possibility to attain revenues from gas exports. Obviously, it is necessary for the appropriate political conditions to exist in order to achieve this, and
hence the significance of the United Nations Security Council and Germany’s P5+1
negotiations. In light of the positive outcome of the negotiations, Iran, which has
been invited to cooperate with the West, can be expected to become an alternative to
Russia in the European energy market (www.aljazeera.com.tr 2015).
