valid for solids, gasses, liquids, or any other materials. It was not possible to include
Boltzmann’s paper without Max Planck (1901) paper. Because they complement
each other.
In introducing basics of thermodynamics, I relied heavily on Callen (1985).
While there are many books on thermodynamics in the literature, I found the work
of Callen (1985) to be most comprehensive and most understandable from a graduate
student’s perspective. I also kept in mind that unfortunately most mechanics students
never take a basic course on thermodynamics at the undergraduate level. Therefore,
the chapter on thermodynamics is based on primarily on the work of Callen (1985).
The rest of the chapters are all taken from my work with my former and two
current PhD students whom I am eternally grateful. My former PhD students who
contributed to the development of this theory over the years are Drs. ChengYong
Yan, Rumpa Chandaroy, Hong Tang, Ying Zhao, Yujun Wen, Shihua Nie, Juan
Gomez, Eray Mustafa Gunel, Shidong Li, Wei Yao, Hua Ye, Ming Hui Lin, Michael
Sellers, Mohammad Fouad Abdul Hamid, YongChang Lee, and soon to be Drs.
Noushad Bin Jamal and Hsiao Wei Lee.
I am especially grateful to the US Navy, Office of Naval Research for believing in
me and sponsoring most of the work reported in this book. Their continous support,
[starting in 1997 with ONR Young Investigator Award program under program
director Dr. Roshdy Barsoum] has been an immense help which without it, this idea
would have never come to realization.
