riting this book would not have been possible without the support
of friends and family. I am grateful to the support of my colleagues
in the chemistry department at Pomona College, in particular Professors
Cynthia Selassie and Daniel O’Leary, who have been a constant source of
support. My research students and members of my Soft Nanomaterials
class throughout the years have been crucial in helping me to develop a
textbook that meets the needs of students interested in this field. I would
like to express sincere gratitude to my good friend and coauthor,
Dr. Lewis Johnson, whose input and dedication was crucial in developing
the second edition. I would also like to thank Dr. Paul Davies (University
of Cambridge) and Dr. Jeanne Robinson (Los Alamos National Laboratory) for providing invaluable opportunities throughout my career. I am
grateful to Professor Bruce Robinson (University of Wahsington) for his
useful comments on Chapters 2, 3, and 4. I would like to thank my
executive editor, Lou M. Han, for his relentless commitment from the very
beginning, and his faith in a second edition. Last but not least, I would like
to thank my wife, Luisa Lucia Johal, for her love, support, and encouragement throughout the years.
