Alternatively, as already mentioned, cellulose and hemicellulose (Fig. 11.9) can
be transformed into platform molecules (Fig. 11.12) such as furfural
(2-furaldehyde), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), and levulinic acid, which are
intermediates for the production of a variety of chemicals or fuels.
