5.4 Production of RIB and Major Facilities
67
TRIUMF, ISAC Vancouver, Canada
Apart from these mega facilities, a large number of relatively smaller but very
useful and productive RIB facilities are functional in different parts of the world.
Notable among them are, TwinSol setup in Notre Dame University, RIBRAS in Sao
Paulo, JYFL in Jyvaskyla, EXCYT in Catania, ALTO in Orsay and CARIBU in
ANL. Some of the major international RIB facilities being planned for future or
under construction are FAIR at GSI, SPIRAL2 at GANIL, SPES at Legnaro and
HIE-ISOLDE at CERN.
5.5 Reaction Studies with Halo Nuclei
The discussion so far has been centered around the structural properties of Halo
nuclei. From the beginning of RIB physics the measurements of total reaction cross
section, Coulomb dissociation cross sections and momentum distributions in breakup
reactions have been the main mode of attack to understand the structure of halo nuclei.
Coulomb dissociation of halo nuclei has been particularly active and productive field
of research. A variety of techniques have been devised to analyze the data generated
from such experiments. Most notable of the findings from Coulomb excitation and
dissociation studies has been the pygmy resonance in halo nuclei [60]. Various modes
of nuclear reactions, traditionally studied with stable beams, are now also studied
with loosely bound halo nuclei. This is a very active field of contemporary research.
On nuclear reactions with halo nuclei, we will be necessarily very brief and only
mention the types of reactions studied. They are, fusion, transfer, breakup (both
Coulomb and nuclear), charge exchange, etc. It is of great contemporary interest to
study the angular momentum limit for fusion of halo and weakly bound nuclei. Elastic
and inelastic scattering studies (reaction cross sections and angular distributions)
of halo nuclei in inverse kinematics on stable targets are also very important and
pose challenging problem to standard optical model analysis. The developments
in experimental techniques and data reduction have been matched by progress in
theoretical reaction studies. For a fuller description of the experimental techniques
and theoretical formalisms, we refer to [50, 61, 62, 63].
