Preface
The collected lectures summarize the contents of the course “Physical Methods in
Inorganic Chemistry.” The first time I gave this course has been in 1981 at the
University of Milano and then from 2000 to 2017 at the University of
Milano-Bicocca, always dedicated to the advanced level students of chemistry and
materials science.
The reader is here conducted, by the symmetry properties of the molecules, to
use the chemical bond models suitable to explain the properties of inorganic and
coordination compounds.
Special emphasis was given to the crystal field theory and to the possibility of
designing the energy level trend by using the electronic spectra and the magnetic
measurements. In 1981, this constituted a frontier research topic, which then
became matter to be regularly taught.
When I am preparing the course the first time, my daughter Diletta was 3 years
and she asked me each evening to repeat the lecture of the day after, sat on her small
bed. In two years, she was able and want to directly write her name, on the
transparencies at that time used during the lectures. I dedicate this book her, who is
now a young women, is an economist and fortunately she did not decide to follow
the mother science traces.
