In the presence of O 2 , as it is in the atmosphere, even aromatic hydrocarbons can
generate persistent radical species. This happens when the transition metal ions
adsorb molecular oxygen which act as bridge with the hydrocarbon itself. The
driving force is constituted by the oxygen adsorption, and no electron transfer is
detected.
