Digital images are widely used in applications as varied as inspection, medical imaging, quality
assurance, and sorting. This section serves as a brief introduction to acquiring and processing digital
images.
Image Acquisition
Consider the characteristics of a digital grayscale image, such as the one in Figure 7.30. A digital
image is composed of an m  n array of pixels, as illustrated in Figure 7.31. Here we have zoomed in on
the edge of one of the coins in Figure 7.30, and we see that the image is composed of pixels having
