Case Study Solutions
Solutions for the tasks and questions within the case study (Chap. 10) are provided
here. Some tasks and questions are rather qualitative and have no single correct
answer. For qualitative tasks and questions, an example solution is provided but is
not necessarily comprehensive.
G.1
Introduction
(a) Plant protection products are a subset of pesticides that work to prevent
crops from being destroyed by disease or infestation. Pesticides can include
herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, acaricides, plant growth regulators, and
repellents (European Commission, 2019b; EFSA, 2019). Such products can help
to prevent losses due to disease or infestation of crops.
(b) Plant protection products can be desirable to protect the health of a crop. Their
active ingredients aim to work as intended on their target and through a specific
mode of action. Undesired properties can include unintended side effects they
might have on nontarget organisms including plants, animals, and humans in
the surrounding environment. Products that are persistent beyond their intended
application are mobile in multiple environmental compartments and/or degrade
into substances that are mobile may also be problematic.
(c) Bion ® aims to control fungal, bacterial, and viral plant diseases through a mode
of action that mimics the natural systemic activated resistance (SAR) response
found in most plant species (Syngenta, 2018). It works by boosting the plant’s
own resistance rather than by targeting the disease itself. This decreases the
likelihood that the pathogen will develop increased resistance.
