10.4 Product Risk Assessment

(b) Assume that, instead of being incinerated, the wastes were recycled and reused
in this or other manufacturing processes. Although the relevant characterization
factors are not provided in order to make the calculations, comment on how
recycling these wastes could potentially affect the LCA’s results.
(c) Evaluate the completeness and consistency of the LCA carried out here. What
are the limitations and uncertainties of the assessment?
(d) Are there any conclusions or recommendations that could be made based on
these results?
10.4 Product Risk Assessment
Following the five steps of product risk assessment introduced in Chap. 6, in
this section published data describing the active ingredient acibenzolar-S-methyl
(ASM) are reviewed to identify risks the substance may pose to humans and the
environment from normal product use of Bion ® . Hazards will first be identified by
reviewing available product information, and exercises will then be introduced that
calculate the estimated environmental exposure to ASM in each compartment as
well as both human occupational and dietary consumer exposure to ASM. This will
be followed by an effect assessment to identify acceptable levels of exposure, which
will then be used together with the estimated exposures to characterize the risks in
terms of risk quotients. In the last step, options to manage any nonacceptable risks
will be identified.
10.4.1 Hazard Identification (Step 1)
The first step of product risk assessment is the identification of hazards (see
Sect. 6.3).
Task: Review and compare the following sources of information on ASM: (1) the
conclusion on the peer review of the pesticide risk assessment published by EFSA
(EFSA, 2014a), (2) the REACH registration dossier for ASM (ECHA, 2019c), (3)
the brief profile for ASM published by ECHA (ECHA, 2019a), and (4) the product
labels for Bion ® published by Syngenta (Syngenta, 2018). Using these data sources,
find out if there are any hazard classifications from the Globally Harmonized System
of Classification and Labelling (GHS) assigned to ASM. If yes, how are the hazards
defined and described?
Keep these resources easily available as they will be needed for tasks in the
upcoming risk assessment steps.
