14 Hot Atom-Nuclear Reaction
Summary
In this chapter, we learnt about a special type of nuclear reaction name as
Szilard-Chalmers reaction. In this type of reaction, it is observed that after any
type of nuclear reaction, the product formed normally emits some electromagnetic radiations like γ -rays. Emission of such radiations causes the product to
experience a recoil of energy which is much greater than the chemical bond
energy. Due to this recoil energy, many different types of products are formed.
Theory of such a process is discussed. The advantage of this type of recoil reaction is that, one can produce radioactive isotopes with a high specific activity
in time much shorter than one would need if it were to be formed by direct
nuclear reaction. This aspect has also been discussed in this chapter.
