9 Variational Principles in Mechanics and Their Applications
at the University of Göttingen in 1907 and worked as a teacher. Taught at the University of Marburg from 1909 to 1914, and the University of Frankfurt from 1914
to 1935. Suffered from Nazi persecution, once was put into Dachau concentration
camp in 1938, moved to the United States in 1939 after release. Joined the U.S.
citizenship in 1944 and taught at Northwestern University at Evanston, Illinois, was
promoted to professor in 1945. Made contributions to analysis, theory of integral
equations, quadratic form with infinitely variable and history of mathematics etc. Set
up Hilbert–Hellinger quadratic theorem in the self-adjoint operator theory of Hilbert
space, and introduced the Herllinger integral. The article co-authored with other Integralgleichungen und Gleichungen mit unendlichvielen Unbekannten (1928) is quite
famous. In addition, also edited and published some works of Hilbert and Klein
(Christian Felix, 1849.4.25–1925.6.22).
Reissner (Eric, 1913.1.5–1996.11.1) American mathematician and engineering
scientist. Born in Aachen, Germany, died in San Diego, America. Once studied
at the University of Berlin, and received a doctor’s degree in civil engineering in
1936. Had been holding a post in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United
States from 1937 to 1970, during the period received the doctorate from the Institute,
served as a professor in 1949, was elected member of the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences in 1950. Served as a professor of mechanics and mathematics
at the University of California in 1970. Mainly engaged in teaching and research
work of applied mathematics and applied mechanics of elasticity. Between 1940 and
1950, had expressed the variational principle of mechanics of elasticity, established
a flexural theory in the large about symmetric bending of thin shell twist. Expressed
the von Karman (Theodore von, 1881.5.11–1963.5.7) problem of bend pipe, and
gave approximate solution. Developed the lifting line theory of aerodynamics. From
the 1960s to 1970s, had performed the system research in applied mathematics and
mechanics related to the engineering of nonlinear large strain of thin wall structure
and so on, and obtained many important achievements. The works had Elementary Differential Eqs. (1961, 1986) and Selected Works in Applied Mechanics and
Mathematics (1995).
Kyuichiro (Washizu, 1921–1981.11.25) Japanese mechanician. Graduated from
the University of Tokyo in 1942. Since then he had worked at the Department of
Aeronautical Engineering of University of Tokyo and served as a professor at the
University. Later went to hold a post in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
United States. Had been engaged in the research under the guidance of the professor
Theodore Hsueh-Huang Pian (Chinese name:
, 1919.1.18–2009.6.20) of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The works had 塑性論ソセイロン (1957),
エネルギ原理入門 (1970), Variational methods in elasticity and plasticity (1968,
1975), コンピュータによる構造工学講座 (1975), and 有限要素法ハンドブッ
ク (1983) etc.
Hu Hai-chang (Chinese name: 胡海昌; pinyin: Hú Hˇ aich¯ ang, 1928.4.25–2011.2.21)
Chinese mechanician and astronautic engineer. Born in Hangzhou, died in Beijing.
In 1946, was admitted to the Department of Civil Engineering, Zhejiang University,
Précédent
