out site prospecting: the tools available were inappropriate, and there seemed
to be no genuine interest in remedying this absurd situation on the part of
those who had sent us on this wild goose chase.
In the face of this harsh reality my wife and I reached crisis point and were
tempted to board the first boat home. Why not? Why should I stubbornly
insist on our staying? Why should I set about fixing old instruments and
designing new ones to make proper measurements? Why battle with wind
and tide against all odds? I suppose it must have been Destiny, that mysterious
hand which in Greek tragedy impels humanity to challenge the gods and
render the impossible possible. As well blame Providence or Fortune.
