Chapter 12
Science Meets Politics: Laws Governing the IAC and Its
Avatars (1975–2011)
The Royal Decree-Law 7/1982 creating the IAC and defining its juridical
regime (‘The Astrophysical Law’) was published in BOE 5 de mayo de 1982.
Royal Decree 2678/1982, indicating the competencies of the IAC was published in BOE 259 de 28 de octubre de 1982. A number of laws restricting the
autonomy of the IAC were subsequently passed, in particular Royal Decree
795/1989 of 23 June, concerning the organization and running of the
IAC. Law 14/2000 concerning fiscal, administrative, and social order measures was published in BOE 313 de 30/12/2000. Law 14/2011 of 1 June 2011
(The Law of Science, Technology and Innovation) was published in
BOE-A-2011-9617.

Steven Weinberg’s talk (‘Origins’) was published as a pamphlet by the IAC.
Chapter 14
The Sky Law (1978–2017)
The value of the Canarian skies as a natural resource for scientific exploitation
is identified by F.  Sánchez, ‘El cielo de Canarias como recurso natural de
reconocido interés científico’, I Jornadas de Estudios Económicos de Canarias
(Universidad de La Laguna and Banco de Bilbao, 1980). Law 31/1988 of 31
October concerning the protection and astronomical quality of the
Observatories of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias was publish in BOEA- 1988-25332. Further information on the work of the Sky Protection office
