The assembly served the purpose of creating synergies and resulted in many
contacts among research teams. These meetings became a regular and moveable fixture. Year after year we would meet in different cities to report on what
we had been doing. They were the embryo of what would later become the
Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA); it was during the IV Assembly, held in
Santiago de Compostela in 1983, that the creation of the SEA was first mooted.
As a further demonstration of the growth of astrophysics in our country, in
1992 the Spanish Astronomical Society was founded. The main reason for its
creation was ‘to contribute towards the promotion and development of
astronomy and astrophysics in Spain, and provide an independent forum for
the discussion of matters of common interest for the astronomical community of Spain’. Finally, in 2001, the president of the SEA was made a voting
member of the CNA, thus integrating both organizations.
I take pride in being one of the 39 founding members of the SEA and of
the European Astronomical Society (EAS), created in 1990, of which I would
eventually become Vice-president.
Because funding for research in these climes is almost exclusively public, it
was mandatory to open channels for these resources to be created and duly
