Following this line, between 1983 and 1985 we developed a new kind of
ophthalmological instrument for the study of the visual field that used a simple cathode ray tube (a television screen) as an element to visualize sight tests.
The aim was to provide an economical and simple tool for the early detection
of glaucoma. An instrument, the Hipocampus, was finally produced, patented,
and commercialized. Hipocampus was the fruit of a collaboration between the
Faculty of Medicine of the University of La Laguna, and MEL, a private
Canarian company set up for that purpose.
Later, between 1985 and 1987, the Oftacron, another ophthalmological
instrument, was developed for spectral observation of the retina. It answered
the need for a non-invasive exploratory tool to examine the retina for various
illnesses that result in the modification or deterioration of the retina. The
