1 Chemicals in the Food and Beverage Industry: An Introduction
(12.3) Category 3 carcinogens: substances and preparations which are of
concern to humans because of possible carcinogenic effects, but for
which insufficient information is available to classify these substances
and preparations in category 2
(13) Mutagens: substances and preparations which, by inhalation or skin penetration, can produce hereditary genetic defects or increase their frequency:
(13.1) Category 1 mutagens: substances and preparations known to be
mutagenic to humans
(13.2) Category 2 mutagens: substances and preparations for which there is
a strong presumption that exposure of humans to such substances and
preparations may produce heritable genetic defects or increase their
frequency
(13.3) Category 3 mutagens: substances and preparations of concern to
humans because of possible mutagenic effects, but for which insufficient information is available to classify these substances and
preparations in Category 2
(14) Toxic compounds for reproduction: substances and preparations which, by
inhalation, ingestion, or skin penetration, can produce or increase the frequency
of non-hereditary harmful effects in the offspring or impair their productive
functions or capacities:
(14.1) Category 1 reproductive toxicants: substances and preparations known
to be toxic to human reproduction
(14.2) Category 2 reproductive toxicants: substances and preparations for
which there is a strong presumption that human exposure to such substances and preparations can produce or increase the frequency of nonhereditary harmful effects in the offspring or undermine reproductive
functions or capabilities
(14.3) Category 3 reproductive toxicants: substances and preparations of concern due to possible reproductive toxicity, but for which insufficient
information is available to classify these substances and preparations
as Category 2
(15) Dangerous compounds for the environment: substances and preparations
which, if they entered the environment, would present or could present an
immediate or deferred risk for one or more of its components.
