Foreword I
A course in Theory of Elasticity is a necessity for the postgraduate and senior undergraduate students in Civil and Mechanical Engineering to understand the behaviour
of elastic solids under applied loads and also the limitation of the results given by
the Elementary Mechanics of Materials. In this text, the authors have developed the
subject in detail and in stages in a student-friendly manner. In particular, the large
number of problems worked out and a variety of problems given as exercise at the
end of each chapter (if worked out) will help the students to gain a good insight into
the subject.
I hope the student and teacher community will appreciate the efforts put into this
endeavour and make use of this text in their studies and teaching in the area of Solid
Mechanics.
