the presence of the model in the test section. The floors are equipped with a boundarylayer suction system to provide a better representation of the flow at ground level.
The contraction sections are of ratios of 4 and 7.7 for the S4 and S10 wind tunnel
with maximum velocities of 40 m/s and 55 m/s respectively.
These two wind tunnels are equipped with a turntable (4 m diameter for S4, 4.34 m
for S10) incorporating a 6-component aerodynamic force balance, where the S4 wind
tunnel has a rolling road. Figure 3.48 shows a competition car being tested in the S4
wind tunnel.
The S4 and S10 wind tunnels are also equipped with specialised equipment such
as a water injection ramp for the simulation of rain and dirt.
The S6 wind tunnel of the IAT-CNAM is designed to perform aero-thermal
studies on large vehicles (trucks, coaches and military vehicles). Its rectangular test
section has an adjustable width of 4–6 m, by displacement of the side walls, a fixed
height of 6 m and a length of 17 m (see Fig. 3.49). The maximum velocity of 20 m/s
is generated by 27 fans located upstream of the test section.
Equipped with a rolling road with a maximum power of 315 kW and a maximum
force at the wheel of 4000 N, the S6 wind tunnel is used for road simulation tests
(endurance of alternators, cooling of braking systems). A 750 kW hot air generator
allows for temperatures up to 55 °C to be reproduced in the test section. Sunshine
is simulated by 180 infrared lamps generating 1.2 kW/m
2 (see Fig. 3.50). The wind
